nose surgery
Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) is performed to improve the nasal
function, nasal aesthetics or both. As a craniofacial surgeon I
often use nose reshaping techniques during nasal reconstruction
for congenital deformities and trauma. The image below shows a cosmetic
rhinoplasty.
The cost of nasal surgery depends on the theatre time. Either an
estimate of costs or a fixed price is given after a consultation
when the required surgical maneuvers are known. Mr Davis recommends
reading through general information (which we are happy to send
if contacted) about nasal surgery prior to a consultation.

Standard dorsal hump reduction
|
Nasal function includes airflow through the nose and may be altered
by manipulating the internal nasal valve, the alar, the nasal septum
or the turbinates. The ways in which the nasal appearance may be
altered are limitless (but have limits!) Altering the shape of a
twisted nose usually involves manipulating the septum (septorhinoplasty)
as its elastic nature may twist the nose again postoperatively.
Ways in which the nose may be altered include;
- reduction of a dorsal hump (often combined with chin augmentation)
- creating a supratip break point –a curve near the nasal
tip
- lengthening or shortening the nose
- decreasing the width of the nasal bones
- refining the cartilage structure of the tip
- correcting a hanging collumella
Nasal reconstruction
Reconstruction of parts of the nose or an entire nose is
performed following trauma, burns, cancer and some birth defects.
Different tissues are used to form the outside of the nose, the
skeleton framework and the internal lining.
Rhinophyma
Rhinophyma is an overgrowth of sebaceous glands and may
cause grotesque distortions. The overgrowth is pared down and the
nose allowed to reepithelialize over a period of 7-10 days.
Nasal implants
Some Asian races have a flat central nasal root and request
augmentation of the entire nasal projection. This is typically done
using a silastic implant which may be placed through an intraoral
incision. It is critical not to have the implant under any tension
as possible complications include having the implant erode through
the skin of the nose.
